Some people put a diss on garage sales, but not I. On one too many occasions I have come across bargains unlike anything I have ever seen. More often then not you will find items that are only slightly used or even brand new for only a fraction of the price you would pay normally in a store.
Just recently our town had their annual Garage sale weekend. Where everyone and their brother is doing a garage sale or helping with one. Or they are like me and wait to do one after the weekend sale because they want to shop the bargains and see what they can come away with.
So on this trip, my husband and I talked about what we need and could use and we talked about what we don’t need, for instance we are set for clothes for all our kids for this summer and this coming fall, so we didn’t need any kids clothes. We do this so we don’t come away with too much stuff and things that will only clutter our home in the end.
Well the first few garage sales we went to, we found nothing on our list, it was a quick walk through and a walk back to our vehicle. And Then we hit the jackpot! Granted it wasn’t on our list but it was something we really needed. Since we homeschool we are always looking for bargains on homeschool games, curriculum and materials. We found a 5 box sets of hooked on phonics for $2 a box. “I don’t think they realized how much these were worth” Most of the items that were in the boxes were still in their wrappings from the store. unopened and of course in brand new condition.
We hit a few more sales and no luck with finding things on our list, but we did hit the jackpot again when it comes to homeschool books and materials. We found 4 brand new boxes of BOB books in a box. for $0.50 a piece.
Our total for all our homeschool material was $12.
When we got home I looked those items up on-line and found out that the hooked on phonics boxes sell for $20 brand new each and the BOB books in a box sell for $17 a piece. Total cost if these had been bought brand new in a store, $168.00 my cost $12 total savings $156
So this mama is excited about the money she saved and is feeling so blessed by God.
If you don’t garage sale, I highly suggest giving it a try, you might be surprised with what you might find.
So our quest will continue, on another weekend for finding more bargains and saving more money.
